The Shrug: It GrowsMarch 28: Lovin' this mindless stockinette--I can knit in the middle of the night on the subway and still keep one eye on the weird dude sitting across the way. Not that I would do that, mind you. No ma'am. Couple of subway rides home and one viewing of the Seven Samurai later and I've got a sleeve! that Bogie must touch: and investigate: and love.... Get Yarn--Jenny StyleMarch 15: I must REALLY, really want to knit this shurg--um, shrug, Ann. Step one: Read about shrug on Mason Dixon Knitting Step two: Order shrug from kpixie.com Step three: Shrug is backordered. Step four: Three days after shrug has shipped, notice arrives in mailbox that package of yarn is waiting at the post office. Step five: Run to post office Saturday morning right before you have to jump in a cab to make it to rehearsal on time--with the folding chairs. (don't ask) Step six: Lose the notice from the post office somewhere on 2nd Avenue between 76th and 70th Streets. Step seven: Plead with surly postal employee to find the package even though you don't have the notice. Step eight: Fail miserably. Step nine: Find the notice on the sidewalk between 73rd and 74th on your mad dash home, in tears, to grab the folding chairs and a cab to make it to rehearsal on time. YOU ARE LATE--no time to go back, but THANK GOD, you have the almighty notice. Step ten: Be pissed off all Sunday that you don't have your yarn and pattern--f-ing post office. Step eleven: Be late to work because you go to post office with stupid notice in hand to liberate the yarn! Step twelve: NOW you can knit. I can get through four rows backstage after my scene. It's going to take me a long time to finish this sucker. Color is garnet, needles are size 2--I knit way too loose for my own good. Photo taken on blouse that was hanging on dining room chair waiting to be ironed--cause that'll happen.
Saturday Morning CartoonsMarch 10: This morning I was lounging on the sofa, drinking a vat of coffee and channel surfing when I landed on the animated "Madeleine". Once again, French chicks are just too cool. The girls in the house all covered with vines have gone fashionista on us--highlights from this morning... One of the girls returns from a shopping excursion to declare, “I have a cliché bag!” The other girls are baffled by the uselessness of the bag, but are won over by the designer label. At this point Miss Clavel starts lecturing them. Choice quotes include, “That style will end at 3 o’clock this afternoon” and “always buy classic”. Wise woman, that lady. Naturally the girls see the light after a day of wearing the latest trend—dresses made of cheese. The little fashionista revolts and shows up in a classic design—“But that dress is by Yves Saint la Mode—I thought you always wanted to dress in cliché!” (Unfortunately Yves Saint la Mode made a live cat stole, which kind of ruined the awesomeness of “Yves Saint la Mode…). Finally, after an afternoon of appearing in a fabulous fashion show, they hit the Paris flea market for some classic vintage style. Why, oh WHY did I not record this! Yves Saint la Mode!
I am WomanMarch 8: Today is International Women's Day. If you know me personally, you know I could talk your ear off about this. Instead I'll paste a bit of the text from the official UN site: "While manifestations of violence against women and girls vary across social, economic, cultural and historical contexts, it is clear that violence against women and girls remains a devastating reality in all parts of the world. Existing research, data and testimonials from women and girls world-wide provide chilling evidence. It is a pervasive violation of human rights and a major impediment to achieving gender equality, development and peace. Such violence is unacceptable, whether perpetrated by the State and its agents or by family members or strangers, in the public or private sphere, in peacetime or in times of conflict." Me and My Cross StitchMarch 7: Nashville Needlework Market was almost a month ago. Crazy how time flies. I went for it this year and registered as my own entity, hung a banner over the railing and there I was. Alone. I would never recommend not having a helper there. One-it is boring. Two-it can get way out of control if more than two people are in there trying to talk to you. Three-you can't get out and see what everyone else has brought to market! Theresa and Cynthia were there and came down to my floor to visit a couple times and to pass on the all important show gossip! I think I left the room twice. Once when May spelled me and I went with Cynthia to run go get my hands on "The Semptress" by by Catherine Strickler of Indigo Rose--and she signed it. It's gorgeous. I love it. I should have bought one for Nicole too, but I was freaking out that May was stuck in the dullness that was my room. The second time I left was on Sunday when the ladies next door, Vintage Bliss, told me they'd watch the door so I could run up to Just Another Button Company to get a sample of the cute little French flag buttons. Too cute. And so sweet of those sisters! I missed Nicole like crazy! Lady, you have to be there with me next year. I need my hit of Valentine! Anyhoo--check out my latest designs. They're the top three on my website. My Dysfunctional Theatre buddy, Amy Overman, did the stitching on the curtain for Chez Moi. Can you stand the artsy-ness of this? Actresses stitching? She's learning to knit now too--one scarf down and currently swatching for her first sweater. Damn I love passing the crafts on.
Craft on, my people, craft on.
