Fine.August 28: I give up. You people have apparently decided that you won't speak to me if I won't take your advice. We're going with the white kitchen. Will you come out and play again? Andy and Laura are excused because the have the ultimate excuse of "imminent arrival of first born child". But before you think you fuckers won because of your silence--it's really because I found out those white cabinets are PAINTED! I was afraid they were thermofoil like most of Ikea's white cabinets and thermofoil is just not cool with me. Painted means that a nice glaze might be in order. You fuckers can have your white and I can have my glaze and together we shall have a beautiful kitchen. Here's the tentative floorplan version 568.02 Sink Wall:
Range Wall: The appliances are a 24 inch wide refrigerator (it's actually about 10 inches taller than the one shown in the plan--that free Ikea software has it's limitations), an 18 inch wide dishwasher and a standard 30 inch wide range with an over-the-range microwave/hood combo. The planner wouldn't let me put a microwave in so squint real hard and imagine...while you're at it imagine that the sink cabinet is the same as the others...damn Swedish program.
Thoughts? Insults? Compliments?
On a completely different topic: Have you ever had to switch antidepressants mid-swim? A couple months ago I started getting these really horrible headaches so the doctor decided to switch things up. Drug withdrawal while slowing tritrating up on a new medication? Said new medication takes about 2-4 months to reach effectiveness? I think it might have been the other ingredients of the cocktail that kept me from freaking out because HOLY SHIT that is just so not right. How did I just quit taking Zoloft in college? Did I feel nothing? Maybe the complete sleep deprevation/heavy workload/new romance environment of college just made insanity seem normal? This new shit better be good because I am NOT doing that again anytime soon.
I've accepted that the pine is just too dark. Apparently none of you will come visit if I chose that one. I like the white. I do. It's just that it's so...antiseptic...and hard to clean. I hate to clean. So May and I had a good little IM chat and discussed paint effects. I like the look of glazed cabinets and antiquing and all that crafty business so I got busy with yahoo-ing glazing instructions and she got busy with paint chips (we're thinking the pine door would be cool painted and distressed). The perfect colors have not been found yet, but I did pick up some clearance paints at Jo-Ann's and had a go with the beadboard panel. Varying strengths of glaze and more vigorous wiping on certain parts...I think it's a good sample and it was really fun to do. I'm just crazy enough to do this. Give me one long weekend and enough Starbucks latte...I can do anything!
I've taken a lot of photos and have them hosted elsewhere so I can leave them rather large for viewing pleasure. So if you chose to play along--you'll have to do a lot of clicking--sorry about that. Keep in mind that I want to continue the theme of the apartment and do something French country-ish. This would be ideal, but who am I kidding? We don't have that kind of money! So here goes:
Ash Grey (sitting on oven drawer):
Beadboard (sitting on oven too):
Or do we just do the plain white, traditionalcabinet:
